💡 Keynote Highlight: “Making Hardware Soft”
At WeShine’s August 5th event in Palo Alto, Larry Li, Founding Partner at Amino Capital, shared how AI is changing what founders can build and where durable value may come from next.
Amino Capital has backed companies including Chime, Replit, Webflow, Rippling, Grail, Weee!, and Turing.
A central question behind Larry’s keynote was:
If everyone can access powerful AI, where does differentiation come from?
Foundation models are improving rapidly, costs are falling, and developers can increasingly move between models. Capabilities that differentiate a product today can quickly become widely available.
Access to a powerful model alone may not create a lasting advantage.
For founders, the question becomes less about which model are you using? and more about what you are building around it?
The opportunity goes beyond software
Larry’s idea of “making hardware soft” is about bringing software, AI, and intelligence deeper into physical products.
Build intelligence into the product itself. Hardware can become more adaptive, responsive, and increasingly software-defined.
Think beyond pure software. Opportunities are emerging across robotics, autonomous systems, industrial technology, healthcare devices, and consumer hardware.
Design around AI from the beginning. The goal is not simply to add AI to an existing product, but to rethink what the product can become.
The model may not be your moat
As foundational technology becomes easier to access, differentiation shifts toward what founders build around it.
Data, workflows, product experience, distribution, and domain expertise can become more important sources of defensibility.
Learn fast. Build fast. What feels differentiated today may become widely available tomorrow.
Execution and adaptability matter. Strong teams need to keep learning as models, tools, and customer expectations change.
Larry also emphasized independent thinking. When everyone rushes toward the same trend, founders should ask:
What do you believe is important that others are still underestimating?
Build for resilience
Technology alone does not build a durable company.
Don’t follow the crowd. Conviction and independent judgment matter in rapidly crowded markets.
Stay resilient. The first product, technology choice, or business model may not be the final one.
Build diverse teams. Different backgrounds and perspectives can challenge assumptions and create stronger problem-solving.
The Founder Takeaway
AI is making intelligence cheaper and more accessible. That makes differentiation, execution, and founder judgment more important, not less.
The winners may not simply have the best model. They may be the companies that best combine AI + product + data + distribution + physical-world applications, while continuing to adapt.
Make hardware soft. Learn fast. Build what others haven’t seen yet.
